Imperial Bricks
This CPD explores the increasing use of brick slips within modern façade construction and Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). It examines the principal construction routes, including mechanically retained, EWI/adhesive and factory-integrated systems, and considers their application in new-build, retrofit and off-site construction.
The seminar focuses on the issues architects and specifiers need to consider when selecting and detailing brick-slip façades, including structure, movement, moisture, thermal performance, fire safety, durability and workmanship. It also considers the implications of the Building Safety Act, Gateway 2 and the Golden Thread, with particular emphasis on understanding the distinction between individual product performance and the evidence required for the complete external-wall assembly.
A case study demonstrates how these principles can be applied in practice, while guidance on brick selection, bonding, detailing and specialist components considers how contemporary façade systems can retain the architectural character of genuine fired-clay brick.
