Sustainability in construction has historically focused primarily on operational carbon associated with buildings. This is the carbon emissions from the energy required to operate buildings, such as lighting, heating, cooling, and hot water.
However, the desire to reach net zero carbon by 2050 has resulted in more scrutiny on all forms of carbon in the built environment, including the carbon required to extract, manufacture, transport and install building materials, this is known as ‘embodied carbon’.
This CPD aims to:
• Explain how embodied carbon is measured and declared
• Explore how the choice of low impact insulation materials has a positive effect on delivering a net zero carbon future
Core topics covered:
Construction and carbon emissions
• What is embodied carbon
• Embodied carbon declarations
