This CPD looks at riser shafts and the importance of eliminating risk through design. It provides an overview of riser shafts and the challenges they pose. It looks at the worst shaft fire in living memory, to ask whether the construction industry is heeding the lessons learnt from this. It explores the areas the industry must focus on, to highlight the design considerations which must be adopted to ensure risk is eliminated at a project’s earliest stages and provides an in-depth insight into current testing and regulations. It then looks at the materials used in riser design and the misconceptions surrounding them. By the end of the CPD you should have a greater understanding of: - The products and materials being used in a riser shaft (chimney environment) and how to select the right ones - Who is responsible for designing riser shafts and the need to design out risk rather than control the risk created by design - The importance of ensuring that the design is holistic, not focused on one thing and that fire is considered - The impact of designing right first time
